This is sort of a general update, with an expression of bafflement at the end.
We've got 11 people whitelisted so far, and I've not been logging in and playing much because I've mostly been knitting, but from what I can tell on the console people are actively logging in and playing and setting up epic bases covered in signs. I like when people put signs in places because when I'm roaming about and I see any indication that someone else has been there first I am reminded that even if I am online alone it is still a social game.
Something is bugging me though, which is the monster-levels.
For some reason when you run a multiplayer Minecraft server the mobs start spawning differently. The mobs don't seem to spawn as much, and the ones that do gather in the peripheries where the game doesn't let them move. This continues until you are surrounded by a ring of DOOM, and you will be absolutely fine at night as long as you don't move, when you will very quickly perish.
I built a cunning slime farm near spawn (down with the XP farm and the enchanting and all that), and it wasn't making much squelch, so I went researching. This problem is also down to the multiplayer mob weirdness, it seems. The solution that's recommended is the MobManager plugin. I installed it, and it stopped the spawner in my XP farm from working so I poked a Spawner setting until it worked again. I also poked a setting that resulted in slimes spawning again.
(Minor tangent: I make all my things turn on and off. My XP farm (skeleton spawner) can be switched off when not in use, and when the slime farm is not in use the platform is covered in water to prevent spawning. The theory is it's easier on server resources, but also it means less annoying noise and lag.)
The result of MobManager is that there appears to be more monsters at night, and they behave more like they do in single-player worlds.
I'm just telling you what I've done and why there is an extra plugin now. I hope this also accurately expresses the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing, and knowledge and advice are welcome! And if you notice mobs behaving weirdly, let me know.
